'Game of Thrones' Movie in Early Development at Warner Bros.
The realm of Game of Thrones might finally make it to the big screen.
Movie Above has heard that Warner Bros. is discreetly producing at least one picture set in George R.R. Martin's huge fantasy realm.
HBO
According to many reports, the project is still in extremely early stages of production, with no filmmaker, actor, or writer involved. However, the firm is interested in investigating the concept of Westeros invading theaters.
The move might indicate a shift in the company's strategy for the property. The showrunners of the first Game of Thrones series (David Benioff and Dan Weiss) notoriously planned to end the series with three feature films rather than a 2019 finale. Martin was also interested in the notion of making a movie, and the author told The Hollywood Reporter in 2014 that ideas were being discussed. For a long time, HBO rejected the notion, preferring to keep the prestige series as an HBO product.
However, since the end of the original series, there have been numerous changes in the company's executive ranks (with HBO now led by Casey Bloys and the film studio led by Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy), as well as the film versus TV landscape — including a greater willingness to shift cinematic properties to the small screen and back again. Matt Reeves' box office hit The Batman has launched its acclaimed HBO spinoff The Penguin, Max's upcoming Dune: Prophecy TV series following the success of Denis Villeneuve's two films, HBO prepping a new take on J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels as a TV series, and Warner Bros. developing new Lord of the Rings movies even as Amazon unfurls its The Rings of Power TV show. In brief, the notion that a genre product must be either a film or a television series has become obsolete, therefore it's predictable that Thrones may be the next item to span mediums.
HBO debuted the successful prequel series House of the Dragon in 2022, and its second season premiered recently. The network also plans to premiere the prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in 2025. Other concepts are also being developed. One fascinating undiscovered zone remains narratives set after the original series, as all movie sequel proposals to date have been prequels.
Thrones content has already featured in theaters, with HBO giving significant episodes of the first season restricted showing around the country to promote the program.
