Squid Game Season 2: Plot Twists, New Cast Members, and Release Date
It's red light, green light! Years after Young-hee the doll plagued us in Squid Game Season 1, the Korean thriller is back for Season 2. We're set to rejoin with Lee Jung-jae's Gi-hun, who returns to the arena to play games till his death.
Netflix
When Hwang Dong-hyuk's series debuted in September 2021, it broke down language boundaries and became Netflix's most viewed series ever. Squid Game had it all: an enthralling idea, fascinating acting, and a narrative that progressively grew darker as the program went.
"I wanted to create an immersive tale. And I wanted viewers of Squid Game to start questioning themselves," Hwang told The Hollywood Reporter. "How am I leading my life? Who am I amid these characters, and what sort of world do I live in? "I wanted these questions to be asked."
Critics also enjoyed the performance. In September 2022, Squid Game cemented its position in television history by winning six Emmy Awards, including Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Lee and Directing for a Drama Series for Hwang, making it the first non-English show to do so.
As the launch date for Squid Game Season 2 approaches, Netflix has been quietly releasing previews of what to anticipate. Here's everything we know about Squid Game Season 2.

When is Squid Game Season 2 coming out?
Squid Game Season 2 premieres on Thursday, December 26, 2024. Netflix confirmed the announcement on July 31 in a video, which also revealed the show's renewal for a third and final season.
The streamer also included a note from filmmaker Hwang. "The first day we started shooting Season 2, I remember thinking, 'Wow, I can't believe I'm back in the world of Squid Game.'" "It almost seemed surreal," he wrote. "I wonder how it will feel for you to be back in Squid Game after three years, as well." Hwang previewed what was to come: "Seong Gi-hun, who promised retribution at the end of Season 1, returns and rejoins the game. Will he succeed in exacting his revenge? Front Man doesn't appear to be an easy opponent this time around. The intense conflict between their two worlds will continue until the series conclusion, Season 3, which will premiere next year."
Squid Game Season 2 cast
The majority of our favorite characters died in Season 1. It's difficult to envision Squid Game without the likes of Park Hae-soo's Sang-woo and Jung Hoyeon's Kang Sae-byeok, but we have no option. In June 2023, during Tudum: A Global Fan Event, Netflix released a cast announcement video for Squid Game Season 2. Sure, we all knew Lee Jung-jae's primary character, Gi-hun (aka Player 456), would return. However, the video reveals that the new participants are also vying for their physical lives.
Lee Byung-hun will reprise his role as the Front Man, while Wi Ha-jun will play Hwang Jun-ho again. The latter is a nice surprise given that the last time we saw Jun-ho, he was shot by his brother, the Front Man. Fans of Squid Game will be happy to discover that Gong Yoo, who featured just briefly in Season 1, will also return.
The video also introduces new players, Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, and Yang Dong-geun, who all hit the green button to start the game. We don't know anything about their characters yet.
Netflix revealed the remainder of the cast for Squid Game Season 2 in June 2023. They include Park Gyu-young, Jo Yu-ri, and Kang Ae-shim. Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, and, of course, Won Ji-an will also appear in the film. Here's a peek at some stars.
