'The Old Guard 2' Finally Gets 2025 Release Date on Netflix

The long-awaited sequel to Netflix's successful action film, The Old Guard, has finally received some good news, as the streaming service has announced the new film's release date. The Old Guard, starring Charlize Theron, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, Harry Melling, and KiKi Layne, debuted in 2020 to critical and audience acclaim, with an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. For five years, fans waited for a favorable update from Netflix on the sequel, which was announced immediately after the original's release. But fans now have a reason to cheer.

During Netflix's "Next on Netflix" event in Los Angeles, the streaming service revealed the release date for The Old Guard 2, which fans had been waiting for for five years. After years of anticipation, The Old Guard 2 will release on Netflix on July 2, 2025. Charlize Theron and Luca Marinelli have confirmed their return for the sequel, which is based on Greg Rucka's comic novel.

There are no published narrative information for the sequel. However, based on Rucka's graphic novel series and the cliffhanger conclusion of the first film, we may draw some reasonable guesses. The Old Guard's conclusion saw Andy (Charlize Theron) lose her healing skills, perhaps terminating her time as an Old Guard. However, Andy's old lover/teammate, who had spent ages tormented at the bottom of the ocean, was proven to have escaped. Although the film has yet to get an official synopsis, the official description for Rucka's second graphic novel provides a solid indication of what to expect in the sequel. It reads:

"When you've waged war as long as Andy and her squad, you've gotten your hands more than bloody. Now, the day has come to confront the sins of the past. But as Nile struggles to make peace with the team, the last person Andy expected to ever see again returns to challenge not only what Andy believes in, but what the team is willing to fight for."

The long release delay for The Old Guard 2 is far more complicated than that of most films. While reshoots and rewrites are common in film production, The Old Guard 2 faced a global epidemic, strikes, and several changes in corporate leadership, all of which were followed by reshoots. According to reports, production on the film ended in 2022. However, it remained in post-production limbo for a year, with Charlize Theron alleging leadership changes at Netflix as the primary cause.

When post-production finally regained momentum, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA joined strikes in 2023. Once they were finished, it was discovered that The Old Guard 2 required reshoots, which took place in October. The Old Guard 2 is finally in post-production, and the release date disclosure suggests that the editing process is proceeding quickly. With the latest news, fans are hoping to see a trailer within the next several weeks.
